Italy begins Christmas on December 8th and it goes til January 7th this year. December 8th is a national holiday. Every town, village, city is celebrating the beginning of Christmas. And magical it is.
Orte has spent the last week getting ready for the big event. Lights, trees, music, video screened on the church, sleigh rides, food, hot wine and so many desserts! The gorgeous horse that did the sleigh rides was amazing. Just a short hop around some buildings…but thrilling to the kids. A video was streamed on the church, a beautiful photo of the Holy Mother. December 8th is a holy day for her.
And the Elf! Yes, even a Christmas Elf made an appearance! As the time wore on, more and more families arrived. Such excitement from the kids.
A trio of Orte ‘donnas’ made some Ortinis…no I wish it was a martini, but not. They had two skillets going on propane burners, with a bit of olive oil in them and then a mixture of something like a taco mix that they fried. Oh they were so adorable. The olive oil was in a large water bottle exactly like the large water bottle filled with water – side by side (one lady’s water). I wondered at what point in the evening would she grab the wrong bottle?
Moving on, the local restaurants had food and pizza. There were vendors with crafts, high end coffee and coffee candies, hot mulled wine that was lovely, home made baked goods…just a lovely evening and a wonderful start to the Holiday!
A few photos of the events! I do believe I am going to find a hot mulled wine recipe and ensure I am ready for holiday guests!!
